Understanding Society is a major longitudinal study run by the Institute for Social and Economic Research (ISER) at the University of Essex. As one of the largest household panel studies in the world, it follows people across Britain over many years to track how their lives, experiences, and circumstances change, providing vital evidence for researchers and policymakers.
I’ve had the privilege of working closely with the Understanding Society team on a wide range of engagement projects since 2015. Our work centres on three essential areas: motivating participants of all ages and backgrounds to remain engaged; equipping and supporting the interviewers who sustain the study year after year; and translating complex research into clear, accessible insights for academics and policymakers.
My work with the team has centred on using design as a tool for connection, creating communications that both inform and inspire. Together, we’ve developed a wide range of materials, where each piece is crafted to feel clear, inclusive and purpose-driven, ensuring the study continues to build trust, maintain participation, and share its insights with impact.
